Self-Improvement Projects

In a month or so, I should have more time. There’s a couple of things I want to do.

  • Buy a Playstation 3 and get a clue again about how kids use technology now. I doubt that anything has really changed in the last ten years, compared to Quake and Unreal, but there’s a chance, and I don’t want to become outmoded.
  • Get the latest edition of Thinking In Java and play with Google’s Web Toolkit. It might be what I need to implement the Glom web UI. Nobody else is doing that so I might as well try it slowly.

    I’m not saying one is better or worse than the other, but if you really want to know how the way kids are using technology has changed, the XBox 360, Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo DS might be a better indicator than the PS3. Actually, any interesting changes are mostly from the social perspective, so you’d need to know people using the DS’ wireless, or using the respective online features of any of the three consoles to really know. The Wii and the DS are the only systems that really do anything “different” apart from that.

    I’m also thinking about buying a PS3, but will probably wait a few months for the price to drop. (And heck i’m buying it for final fantasy anyway and that isn’t coming out till ‘08)
    Also your not fooling anyone with “how the way kids are using technology” ;)
    I would have believed a “To install linux on it and see how glob preforms on the cell”
    but just admit it, you just want one too feel like a kid again :)

    You’d probably be much better of getting a Wii (and/or maybe a DS) if that is your intention, and chances are, you, as a casual or inexperienced gamer will enjoy it a lot more. Not that the PS3 is in any way a bad machine, I’d like one myself, but it’s mainly raw power adn not so much innovation nor what “kids are up to these days”.
